Those who were looked upon as having healing powers were called "quacks".For sprains or swellings chicken-weed was applied, dog-roots were supposed to stop bleeding and elder-berries were taken in a drink for heavy colds. If a lizard licked a burn it would cure it. The "fasting spit" was rubbed on boils.In the district of Hollywell, Kilrickle, Loughrea there was a holy well for the curing of sore eyes. A girl went from this district with a sore eye. When she had her "rounds" done, she was taking a drink and the pearl fell from her eye and she was completely cured. It was believed that if a person with yellow jaundice crawled between a white horse's legs that he would be cured. "Garlic" was taken for asthma.
