(continued from previous page)the "cant" in Kilmeague which was a kind of auction, to make the money. It was always Protestants who bought at the "cant." Mr. Thornton's (of) grandfather of Ballyteague, was a tithe gatherer and he and, Father O'Reilly, the Parish priest of Allen at that time, fought at the priest's gate, because he was taking the priest's cow for tithes, and that ended the tithe gathering in Kilmeague.
James Carew was a member of Parliament for North Kildare. James Kennedy from Rathcore beat Carew in the election. Carew's last meeting was at the Cross of Allenwood. There was a dance in James Brennan's in Grangeclare and Carew's backers were at it and they sang a song the chorus of which was:
"Whiskey hot and porter too
To nourish the herds of Jimmy Carew."(no title)
