  1. Candles in the olden days were home - made. In every house was a hollow tin case the shape of a candle with a hollow bar through the centre. The molten tallow was poured into the case and left until hard. Before hard a cotton cord was pushed through the bar the bar was then pulled out leaving the wick in the candle.
