Within its walls moulder the bones of many a fierce old warrior of the O'Herlihys the hereditary chieftain of the wild and rugged territory for miles around. Nearby on the north bank of the river Sullane stood their castle, long since reduced to a heap of stones. Gobnet's holy well still attract pious pilgrims on the 11th February and on Whit Sunday each year.Nor is the veneration of St Gobnait confined to West Cork. In Co Waterford there is a mountainous parish named Kilgobnat under her patronage, and in the diocese of Limerick a hamlet of the same name, where the people cherish a special devotion to her memory. There is no ancient church or ruin in either place, but for centuries annual fairs have been held at both Kilgobnets on the saint's feast.
