- The potatoe crop was the chief crop grown in Ireland long ago. In early Spring the land was ploughed with a small wooden plough, which was drawn by four donkeys and the traces were straw ropes. Then it was harrowed. At that time only one man in a village would have a harrow, and he would lend it to his neighbours and they would give him two days digging soil in return. The land was then marked into ridges with the plough and the slits were "stuck" in them with the spade, and the manure was put out with an ass and baskets or "pardogs" as they were usually called. The manure was a mixture of clay, mud, and manure, and evenly mixed so that it produce a good crop.
