On the 2nd February St Brigid's Day is celebrated. On that evening, especially the girls make what they call a "Bredeog" or in other words a straw doll. One girl then wears a shawl and carries the doll under it as a mother would her baby. They then go from house to house asking something for the "Bredeog" they are generally given a few pennies in honour of St. Brigid. When they have enough travelled [?] they go to some shops and buy sweets or some other good things.The people also make crosses of straw which they call "St. Brigid's crosses". One of these is hung on the rafters of each house, the people believing by so doing that St. Brigid would protect the house from fire.Shrove Tuesday
This occurs the day before Ash Wednesday. It is also called "pancake" Tuesday because that evening most people have pancakes for tea.
