- O'Dowd was a great chieftain, some hundreds of years ago. He had many castles near Ballina. The English came and took all his castles and land, so that he had nothing left. He fought for many years to get them back but he never succeeded. So it has passed into a proverb that we will get a thing when O'Dowd gets his castles back again, which means that it will never come to pass.
