  1. Every district's name is derived fro some local happening. Take Glasthule for instance. Glasthule is so-called because a stream flows past St. Laurence O'Toole's birth-place and enters the sea at the New Road. At one time only six cottages occupied Glasthule and it was not until late in the ninteenth century that Glasthule flourished.
    The word Sallynoggin means Sally of the Noggin. At one time a public house stood in Sallynoggin. A woman named Sally owned it, and to keep on good terms with her customers she gave them a noggin of whiskey every first
