    During the Cromwellian wars Monkstown Castle was a monastry in which lived Franciscian monks, but it did not escape for long, the tyranny of Cromwell's soldiers. The castle was stormed and the soldiers took possession of it. The monks made their escape an under-ground passage. The soldiers made camp outside the castle and one day when Cromwell's son-in-law Ireton was on a tour he stopped at the castle and spent the night there. The castle which is now in ruins stands on the Widow Gamble's Hill.
