   Familiar Sayings:-

   The following was a common rhyme recited by children in my childhood days:-

   "Up the long ladder and down the short rope, To Hell with King Billy, and God Bless the Pope."

   Another couplet wiich could be applied to any man in the district ran as follows:-

   "Early in the morning Tom McGeough went out to rowl (roll)
   He broke the rowler (roller) in the middle and to himself it may be towl (told)"

   When putting a child to bed it was customary for a parent to recite the following lines:-

   "We'll go to bed" says Sleepy Head;
   "Time enough" says Slow.
   "Put on the pot", says Greedy Guts
   "We'll eat before we go".

   A variant of the familiar saying "Looking for a needle in a haystack" ran as -
   "Looking for the Grace of God in an Orange Lodge".
