    The people of this neighbourhood suffered a lot of torture during the Great Famine and the Penal Days. During the Penal days the people were forbidden to have priests or schoolmasters. The Catholics had to pay tithes to the Protestant clergy. A Catholic could not own any land which was valued at more than thirty shillings a year.
