- Long ago all houses were thatched. The roofs were made of sods timber and straw. The windows were small with twelve panes in each window. The floors were made of clay. It was the common clay which was let set with the frost. Clay floors are not as good as cement floors because they wear away very quickly. In every house there was a settle bed in the kitchen. Our house was the first stone wall house in the district. It is built on two gripes. there are five rooms and two lofts and a little loft on which the potatoes were left. The windows are very small.
