    The cloving was done with a cloving tongs made by a carpenter. Cloving cleaned the flax and weakened it. Cloving was done twice.
    The second cloving made it cleaner still and finer.
    Then it was "hackled" to make it thoroughly clean and free from dust.
    After that it was "carded" and spin with a linen wheel and made into thread.
