- Candle making: Formerly candles were made in every house where a cow or a goat was killed because they were made from the tallow which surrounds the intestines and is along the backbone of these animals. They are not made except in rare occasions at present because people very seldom kill cows now and it would not be worth while bothering with the tallow of a goat. At present people kill pigs to supply meat for the family and the fat of the pig is "rendered" and preserved for frying. Formerly people could not afford to kill pigs and anyway beef was more popular because it was easy to make soup or other "kitchen" with it where there were young families, and old cows were very cheap. Often they could be bought thirty years ago for anything from thirty to fifty shillings and the skin often fetched £1 or 25/-.
And when a farmer had an old cow and a young one to replace her he stall-fed the old one for a month or two around "digging" time when waste potatoes were(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
