- Flax is not now grown in the school district and it was last grown between twenty and twenty five years ago by the Cronins at Cornhill Headfont Killarney.
When the flax was pulled it was tied in [?]s and when saved was put in flax holes and covered with water. There are flax holes in a number of places which shows that flax was extensively grown in former times. A flax hole is a part of a stream which was widened by digging away the banks. It is about ten or twelve feet square and stones fitted around the edges.
The flax was left in the water until the outer husk broke off when a stalk was bent or rubbed between the hands.
When tested in this way if it was not ready it was tested very often - every couple of hours - because if it was left too(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
