- Candle Making :-
People long ago often made candles, and some people in this district still carry on the same custom. First they got the fat of a sheep and made tallow of it. Then some person got a cotton thread and put a knot at one end of it. First they put the thread which formed the wick into the middle of the mould, and then they put in the tallow, and left it stand to cool and harden. This formed a candle.
Basket making :-
This is an old custom which was carried on by many people long ago, but now they are seen very seldom. The basket makers selected 18 rods and stuck them in the ground each a few inches apart. Then they wove the other rods until they had it a foot high this they called a "buínne". When they had three "buínnes" made they had the basket complete. Matt Healy, Lackaban, and Matt Healy, Gurraneredmond, were very good at making them.
Coopers Work :-
There was a cooper in this parish who lived at Stuake his name was Eugene Mac Carthy. Another lived at Gowlane whose name was John Kelleher. The coopers made churn - barrels, churns, and barrels. They also whooped barrels and put revits on them.
