- A custom which prevailed among the beggar fold of Ireland until recent years was following up wedding parties and going to the houses where the wedding festivities were held so as to get food and money. These they got in plenty. Often times even well-to-do people, for a joke, disguised themselves as beggars and went to such places, especially during Shrovetide when the nights are cold and dark. It happened once in my mother's time near Ballyduff.
A wedding had taken place in the neighbourhood and being far distant from any big town no beggars heard of it. Knowing this two young farmers disguised themselves as beggars and went as man and wife and they tookwith them a feather pillow which was supposed to be their child.
They proceeded to the wedding house and having heard all the music and dancing the man knocked lightly at the door. It was opened(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
