On the night of the release of the MountJoy prisoners, There was a celebration at Canada Cross in honor of the occasion.
Several young boys got a barrel tar and lit it and sang songs and made speeches.
During the celebration the black and tans heard noise and came on the scene.
They ordered the crowd to disperse and when not obeyed at once they fired at the crowd with the result three men were killed namely Paddy Hennesy, Tom Leary and Jack O'Loughlin and others wounded. As a reprisal the local Volunteers ambushed a car of black and tans who were going to Ennistymon at Dromin Hill and killed them all. The black and tans set fire to eight or nine houses in town the same night and the people had to run for their lives to the country
