- In years gone by three important ship wrecks have taken place near our coast, some a good many years ago, and others quite recently.
The "Lion" was wrecked early in 1908, the "Kelp" was recked in 1915 and one of the Spanish Armada was wrecked in 1588.
The "Kelp" which came from the Fiji Islands had a cargo of tallow, hides, dog biscuits, horns, and hooves.
Some of the people took things from the ship, and they made use of the tallow for household purposes, and this is what brought diptheria to that part of the country.
The captain was Captain Hanley and he said he was was born at Dunsallagh a few miles outside the town, but the rest of the crew were foreigners.
Only one sailor was drowns, and the other seven were saved.
