  1. In all old graveyards the coffin of a priest is placed in the grave in a country direction to those of lay people. As the priest faces the congregation from the altar when living so he must face them in death also.
    The funeral cortege always made the circuit of the graveyard twice, reciting the De Profundus, and stopped at the grave on the third round for the burial of any person. This custom is still preserved in much of the old graveyards, but in the present "rushing" age, it is neglected in the modern burial places, so, a short cut is taken and the dead covered up with all speed.
