    to bring luck to the house for twelve months and when they are renewed again and again their houses are supposed to be blessed for ever:
    On the twelfth night twelve Rushes are got and peeled they are then soacked in Hog's Lard for some time they are lit that night and placed in a soft turnip, (I suppose to honour the night or else to honour the twelve nights of Xmas. There is an important Shrine a few miles from Mayo Abbey
    Knock where the Blessed Virgin appeared. Pilgrims come every year to this Shrine and some people take a little bit of Mortar and Holy Water with them if anyone gets sick in their houses they give the Holy Water and Mortar to them, Many cures were by those things.
