    and the game was rough throughout. Bekan won the match but the score is not known. It is said that they only won by a couple of points.
    No hurling match was ever played in this district.
    The principal diversion held in this parish was weight-throwing. About sixty years ago competitions were held every Sunday after Mass. Bekan rivalled Knock, Kiltimagh, Claremorris and even Ballinrobe. The cometitions were held in a field near the chapel which belonged to Thomas Tarpey.
