chapel with friends and came home with their husbands. The wedding was held in the bride's house. During the night the Straw Boys visited the house. They were dressed in old clothes and had tall straw hats and had stout sticks in their hands. They came to the door and asked for the bride and bridegroom. If plenty of drink was given to them they went away quietly but if not, they usually did some damage. A 'hauling home' was held. Men raced against each other on the way home. Often this ended in a fight during the night when men were intoxicated. Wives rode with their husbands.
