pulled it, and tied up in separate bundles. They then put it into a lake or bog hole until it had become white. Afterwards it was spread out to dry once more. It was then scutched until all the heads were knocked off. This was done with a scutching handle which was made in the district by the people. Then it was carded and hackled. When all this work was finished it was brought to the weaver and was weaved into linen sheets and towels.
Very little pottery work was carried on in the district. The people had wooden vessels, generally called noggins. There were a few nailers in the district. They made horse nails and also nails for boots. This iron was procured from the foundries in Kilkelly. Basket making and thatching were carried on in the district in great abundance. The baskets were made from sally rods which were growing in the district. Some of these rods are still left. There was not much tanning in the district as there was a leather manufacture in Claremorris.
