- (continued from previous page)barley. It was worked by the water of the river. The water was coveyed by what was called a mill-race and that is still to be seen. There was also kilns where they used to dry the corn before grinding it.
The Washing StoneThere is a field in the village of Cloontia and it gets the of the washing stone. It was the custom for the women village to take their home spun sheets to wash them in a stream and betle them on this stone. They then spread them out to bleech. After that they were again taken and washed and beetled. They kept on this until they were as white as snow.
A Stone of HistoryThis stone is to be seen in the river Brosna. It lies between two Baronys, the Barony of Gallon and the Barony of Tireragh. It divides two Dioceses the Diocese of Killala and the Diocese of Achonroy. It divides two Counties, County Mayo and Sligo. It divides three parishes the parish of Ballina the parish Bonniconlon and the parish of Castle Connor.
