- The two Patron Saints of Clonea Parish are Saints Cuan and Brogan. A Religious House in Mothel was founded by St Brogan in the sixth centure near the present Holy Well. St Brogan was the first Abbot. He was succeeded by St Cuan
Hundreds of years afterwards a Priory was built by the Augustinians where the present grave yard in Mothel A boundary stone of the old Abbey may still be seen. There is a Holy well in Mothel. It is dedicated to Sts Cuan and Brogan. Their feast is celebrated each year on the 8th of July. The Pilgrimage lasted for a week It is called the Pattern of Mothel.
An old story is told about the well. It is said that one day two trout were taken out of the well and brought home. They were put into a pot to be boiled and had to be returned to the well These two thout appeared in the well at certain times of the year.- Collector
