  1. A mode of conveyance used on hilly farmers South Monaghan is known as a "Slipe". This is actually is also locally known as a "Drug". Both names are I believe unique; I have never heard them outside my native county.
The Slipe resembles a sleigh and is usually drawn by a horse - occasionally a jennet is used. In the early spring farmers use the Slipe for conveying soil from the low lying portion of a field to the soil-starved areas on the "brae" from which soil is being constantly washed down by winter rains.
The Slipe is about five feet in length and 18" is depth and it is shod with two iron plates about 4" wide and 1/4" thick. The Slipe is curved at both ends.
