“The lights used in this country long ago were known as "Rush Candles".”
(1) The lights used in this country long ago were known as “Rush Candles”. They were long green rushes brought in from the fields and dried and peeled and put into tallow and put up in bundles and according as they wanted them they used them for lights [of] at night(2) Long ago all houses were made of mud and clay floors. A small window with one or two panes of glass in them. More houses were with one room and a kitchen and in that kitchen stuck into the wall was a small bed called a “pouch”. They whitewashed the house inside and outside.(3) The food they eat long ag was “Bonachs” of oatmeal bread baked up to the hearth fire and oatmeal porridge twice a day for breakfast and supper and potatoes of herrings for dinner.(continues on next page)- Collector
