Making a Straw Rope. When a man wants to make a straw rope, he must have straw, a thraw hook, and a person to twist.
A thraw hook is a strong piece of wire with a small bend at the upper end to catch the straw with.
The other end is bent too, so that it is easy for a person to turn the thraw hook.
There are two thick pieces of sticks on the wire for the person to hold so that the wire will not hurt his hands.
The man gets a chair and goes to the house where the straw is
He sets down the chair and pulls some straw so that it will be nice and loose.
He sits down on the chair and lifts some straw and bends it round the twist on the end of the thraw hook.
Then the other person turns the thraw hook round and round so that the straw is twisted.
As the person twists the man fastens on more straw so that when it is twisted the rope is about the thickness of a man's finger.
When the rope is long enough the man rolls it into a ball.Joseph Kennedy, Trainbeg, Trenagh, Lifford, Co. Donegal.
