    gable, as all the other farm-houses had, but, the fireplace was in the middle of the floor.
    Accordingly, there was a hole in the roof, which served as a chimney. This house is not to be seen now, as it has long since crumbled away.
    The roofing of the old houses did not involve much expense or time. First of all, the "couples" were set up; it was then covered with long sticks or bits of timber, called "ribs". A crowd of men were then sent to dig "scraws".
    There were about six feet long and two and a half feet broad, and resembled sods. The scraws were placed with the clay-end downwards on the "ribs."
