Skerries, Co. Dublin.In Skerries a great deal of buying and selling is carried on principally in the shops, although a great number of folk from adjoining towns come to sell fish and vegetables. I have heard that as the Monument Skerries, a market was held weekly. The name given to the people who send fowl around to be sold is "higgler." Some of the names given to money here is, A halfpenny is called a 'make' or a 'red.' A penny is called a 'wing' or a 'clod'. A sixpence is called a 'kick' or a 'tanner'.
