- (73)Old Crafts - Thatching.
(Skerries, Co. Dublin.)Thatching is one of the oldest crafts known about Skerries. It is carried out by numerous men in the parish. When a man is going to thatch a house he rakes all the loose thatching off the house, and throws water on the new straw. Next day he ties the straw into little bundles called "swads". He then gets a pointed implement called a "slice" and makes a hole in the thatch. Into this hole he shoves the "swad" as tight as possible. He continues this till he had the whole roof finished.
