- They take a "slam" of hay and twist it .Then they put their thumb into it. They used to keep pulling out of the hay as they wanted it. Those ropes were made for cocks of hay. People also made them for thatching, but they made them a little thinner. When they wanted to make a rope called a "suzan". they made it twice as long. When they had it made, they doubled itin the middle and twisted one around the other. They did the same when making a straw rope.
