- There was an old shoemaker once that lived in a little hut. As he was one night sitting by the fire his friend came in and told him of a fairy that was in a certain place. The old shoemaker waited for a bright night and he went to the place. He searched the place and when he was about to return home he heard a sound like the ticking of a watch. He went to where the sound came from. When he came to the place there was an old man sitting down mending shoes. The fairy asked the man what did he want. The man said he wanted gold. The fairy wanted to put him away but he said he would not go until he got the gold. The fairy told him to go home and get a spade and dig the root of this tree. He did as he was told. When he came back the fairy was gone and first he was very angry but he began to dig and he came upon a large flat stone. He gave it a push and a handful of gold(continues on next page)
