one day an old woman went to pay her rent to Tottenham and she said "That you may never die." He asked her why she said this and she said "The man who was here before you was bad, you're worse and the next will be the devil entirely."
Tottenham's wife was a descendant of Sir Frederick Hamilton and her name was Sarah Anne Gore. She was very harsh on her servants. When she got married to Tottenham her initials were S.A.L.T. (Sarah Anne Loftus Tottenham) so her servants nicknamed her "Salt" but this name was never used in her presence.
