- When the soot falls down, when the smoke ascends up straight, when the mountains and hills appear near, when the sea is to be heard, when the clouds lie on the top of Nephin, when there is a fog with an old moon, when the curlews whistle, when the people complain of rheumatism we can expect rain.
We can expect frost when the blackjacks and clocks come into the kitchen and when the stars appear to shoot. When there are swallows to be seen late in the year, it is the sign of a dark, foggy and cold winter. When there is a hard cold drying it is the sign of snow.
The signs of good weather are when the swallows fly high in the air, when the sheep gather together on hills, and when the sun sets red in the evening.
