- Shops were not as common in olden times as they are nowadays, and the people used to have to go to the nearest town to buy their goods. Selling and buying was always the custom in olden times on a Sunday after Mass. They used to give pigs and cattle in exchange for goods. There are different kinds of money such as, a bull's eye, a tanner, a bob, and a quid. It was often said that money returned back again to the owner. Rag men, and tinkers often visited our district. The people often went five or six miles to a shop to buy their little goods.
