- Long ago there were no schools and a learned man used to teach the children. In the summer he would teach them under a hedge, and in a barn in the winter. There was a hedge school in Ballinafad in FItzmaurice's garden. The man who taught there was Michael Farrell. He was a very clever man.The subjects he taught were reading writing and arithmetic.
