- In former times people lived in mud houses which were thatched with sedge which was cut out of a river and saved in some field. Some of those houses were thatched with rushes and lined with bog sods to the inside. There was a hole in the roof to let out the smoke and it was known as the chimney. There was a small bedroom in some of those houses. There was no latch or lock in former times, the usual protection to keep the door from coming in with the wind was a piece of deer's horn.
