a hen i.e. when she is hatching it is customary to place a piece of iron such as a horse shoe under the hay in the nest for luck and to save the birds if a thunderstorm comes,
The roundest eggs are set under the hen if pullets are required and the very oval ones for cocks. It is sometimes considered not lucky to give away the first setting, It is customary for one woman to go to another for a setting of eggs. She either buys them or gives another in exchange.
