  1. There is an old and uninhabited forge quiet convenient to my home in the townland of Ranalough. Three generations of smiths lived there but the third man died unmarried and so the house went to ruin. The first generation of these smiths first came from Foylemore near Caherciveen and his name was O Sullivan. This man was first a "journeyman smith" and worked in Castleisland. Mr Meredith then the landlord in this district brought him from Castleisland and gave him an old house which he afterwards constructed into a forge. That is abut eighty years ago. Patrick O Sullivan the third man died about a year ago.
There are two other smiths in the district presently. These have no one before them in the job.
