    bread was made with oatenmeal, milk, soda, and a little salt and baked on a griddle. It was also called a griddle cake. For the other bread Indian meal was used instead of the oatenmeal. A kind of bread called "stampy" made from potatoes was sometimes used for breakfast.
    Late suppers were not taken at that time, but after nightfall the last meal of potatoes and veal or beef was taken while one of the family held splinters to show light to the others while eating.
