- Long ago bread was made from wheat and oats grown locally. The flour was made locally. Potato bread Oaten bread and boxtie bread were the principal kinds of bread made in olden times. Potatoes and flour were used to make potatoe cake, Oaten meal, flour, salt and sugar were used to make oaten cake. Raw potatoes grated and flour and salt were used to make boxtie cake. Milk and water were both used in the kneading. The bread was made in pot ovens and Griddles Boxtie bread was made for Hollow'een.
