- The local fairs are held in CastleBlayney, Carrickmackross, Ballybay and Monaghan. They are always held in the towns nowadays. Sometimes buyers come to the farmer's houses to buy cattle. This is still done. There is a fair held one a hill every July in Ballybay.
In CastleBlayney there is a place for the cattle caller "The Fair Green". When a buyer puts cattle in a yard he is charged money which is called "toll." it amounts to about two pence a beast. The people who have stalls on the street are charged "toll" also. When a farmer sells an animal he gives luckmoney to the buyer.
When a bargain has been made the two parties strike hands together to show their agreement. When animals are sold a mark is put on them with keep or sometimes a little hair is clipped off the animals back.
