Many years ago - 1745 - the potato-crop failed because people didn't know how to spray. That was the time of the Famine when people were depending on potatoes alone. They were in terrible want and the Government erected "porridge-houses" here and there through the country to relieve them. This was the first time that Indian-meal was used in Ireland. It was Indian-meal porridge that was made in these houses and it was distributed among the people. Some got more than others and if you went late you got none.
There used to be a "porridge-house" in Coravan a townland near this school but there is no trace of it now.
Potatoes are dug in late summer they are all dug out before the end of October. They are put in pits, and covered with rushes and clay. There are various kinds of potatoes - there are - Kerr's Pinks, Epicures, Aran-Banners, Skerry Blues, Champions, Up-to-Dates and Aran-Victors. The Champion was considered the best for eating, but it is nearly gone out of use now. Kerr's Pinks grow best around here.
N.B. A Boiler supposed to have been used in making Indian Porridge in one of these porridge houses is supposed to be in the yard of Mr. Keelagham Merchant Ballybay, Co. Monaghan.
