Myself and Jane, my trusty mare,
Were known from Cross to Moy,
I sang and whistled all the way,
    Not one did us annoy.
With a poor rate ticket in my hat,
I thought to pass that way,
When two stout fellows caught me,
    Saying "you cut McMahon's hay.
    IV
    When I reached Crossmaglen,
No stabling could I get there,
    Two police were ordered out,
    To guard myself and mare.
    "O gentlemen I civilly said,
What have I done to day",
"O hold your tongue" they all cried out,
    You cut McMahon's hay.

Now I am in sad misfortune,
And I dont know what to do,
For Jane she is grazing round the rocks,
    Without a single shoe,
Although I do not want her,
Im off the roads to day.
