  1. Long ago the old people used to say that if you go out to the nearest well on the first of May at five o'clock and give some of the water to your cows they will milk good all the year. But what used to happen was, the smart people used to go around with buckets and milk their neighbours' cows when they went to the well. This was soon stopped, for one morning two of the smart boys came to the same cow house, and they began to fight. While they were fighting the farmer came back from the well and caught them. Both
