- In the district of Lisdowney most marriages occur before Shrove. Tuesday and Friday are supposed to be unlucky days for marriages and the month of May is also thought an unlucky time. Matches are made in this district and stock is sometimes given as a dowry. It is the custom for the bride groom to enter the church first and the wedding feast is held in the bride's house. On the night of the wedding the straw boys go to the house and dance. Some of them wear masks and others polish their faces. They generally get a great reception because they make great sport for the night.
