- Long ago nearly everything that was used by the people of Johnstown was made in the homes. Candle-making was carried on in this locality long ago. Those who made them melted the fat of a sheep, an when it was melted it was called tallow. They they made it into candles, and they made what held the candles also, and at that times it was called a sconce.
People made most of their utensils from wood, the chief ones were pails and churns, and the pails were made so as they could be carried on the hip, and there were keelers made for holding them. The churns of the olden days were called dash-churns, and they were very hard to churn with.
Clay-pipes were also made in the homes, by burning clay, and letting it bake, until it was quite dry, and whitish, and then it was shaped like a pipe.
