- Hedge schools did not exist in our district at any time. Most of the teaching was taught in the farmers houses. There was a school teacher in Boyle's house. The name of the teacher that was in our house was Mary Connolly. The way the teachers used to be paid for teaching, the children would give them a penny every week. The subjects that were taught were reading books, spelling, and sums. Long ago the children would not write on paper the would take slates with them to school and write with slate pencils and they(continues on next page)
